The image to the right is an example of the new Consumers Energy bill.  Click on the image for a larger version and to see the highlighted sections that contain the important information you will need for your enrollment.

Customer Type

The first thing you must know is what type of customer you are to determine what contract you will enter into.  If you are a non-commercial residence then the choice is simply Residential.

If you are a commercial user then you will have to determine whether you are above or below 500 mcf annually.  On the new Consumers Energy bill determining this figure is not as straight forward as it once was.  Please refer to the images below to calculate your annual usage.

The above graph is showing the Total usage between September 2009 and September of 2010.  To determine your annual usage add up all twelve highlighted numbers from your most recent Consumers Energy bill.  If this figure is equal to or below 500mcf then you will need to enroll as a small commercial customer.  Otherwise, if your usage adds up to above 500mcf then you should enroll as a large commercial customer

Buyer's Name and Mailing Address:

Now that you know what type of contract you need to fill out you can start doing so.  The first piece of information you need is the buyer's name.  This should be the person that is listed above the mailing address on the Consumers Energy bill, or someone that is legally authorized to make changes to the account.  If these names differ from each other it is important that you include a copy of your Consumers Energy bill with your contract so that the correct name is given during the enrollment process.

Account Number and Service Address:

Next is your Consumers Energy account number and the service address.  They are located in the right hand column in the Summary of Charges section.  In certain circumstances your service address can differ from your mailing address.  It is important to check that you have the correct service address.

Consumers Energy POD Number:

This number is very important as it identifies your natural gas meter.  It is also the easiest to make a mistake on.  You actually have two POD numbers from Consumers Energy, one natural gas and one electric.  For this reason please make sure you record the POD number under the Gas service section of your bill.
